1. The Presence of Christ

By Henry Gray

Portland Stone

£2,600

Henry trained as a stonemason and works as a stone carver, taking commissions for inscriptions, relief carvings and sculptures. He also runs stone carving courses at his studio near Salisbury. This carving was created for the 400th anniversary of the English translation of the Bible in 1611 and is illustrated in bright colours as was fashionable at the time.

In their own words ...

This carving was created for the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, the English translation of which was completed in 1611. It illustrates a direct relationship with Christ, the vibrant colours representing the illumination of the World through the Bible. It shows the changing landscape in Britain over the last four centuries.

The carving has been painted in a style that was prevalent when the King James Bible was first printed. It is painted and gilded using as bright colours as possible, although today it is unfashionable to paint stone, as tastes and attitudes have changed.

The message of this carving is to demonstrate the continuity provided by the written word and that it is possible to move beyond the words, towards a direct relationship with God.

I trained as a stonemason and work as an artist craftsman based in the Chalke Valley, near Salisbury. I take commissions for memorials, relief carvings, inscriptions, garden sculptures, fountains and furniture. I enjoy working closely with clients to make outstanding work. The only restriction on what can be made is dictated by the material and the imagination.

I also run stone carving classes term time and at weekends at Gray’s Stone Carving Studio. I have just lead a course on ‘Stone Carving as Mediation’ arranged by the Western Chan Fellowship.
