By Mike Grevatte

Carved and painted oak

£350

Mike has been working as a sculptor for over 40 years, having trained in Leicester and Oxford. He has produced many public commissions in stone and bronze, besides work for houses and gardens. His wood carvings are often abstracted from simple natural forms, carved and painted in vibrant colours. He likes to work in local wood, such as oak and willow.

In their own words ...

Mike has created sculptures Arthur's Eye (9) and Awakening (13).

Arthur's Eye. Many of my carvings are in local oak which I paint in vibrant earth colours. The carving painted with a red shield made me think of Arthurian chivalry, so it was appropriate to exhibit it at the abbey.

Awakening. Here I was attracted by the natural shape of the roots of this ancient willow stump which I rescued from a bonfire on the Somerset Levels. I turned it upside down, carved and painted it. The roots once reached down into the earth, but are now reaching up to the sky, so I called it 'Awakening'.

I have been working as a sculptor based in Glastonbury for 40 years, having trained in Leicester and Oxford. I have produced many public commissions in stone and bronze, besides producing sculptures for houses and gardens. My earlier work was mainly figurative, but in recent years I have concentrated on abstract sculptures in various limestones and hardwoods. I particularly enjoy making wood relief carvings which I paint in vibrant colours. My carvings are often derived from simple natural forms or architectural shapes.
